Description
[JUDAICA] - A pendant known as a ‘Fulet hamsa’, made of hammered and folded sterling silver (800), in the shape of a three-leaf clover and featuring a stylised decoration of foliage scrolls, with cloisonné enamels depicting polychrome flower buds. The openwork decoration has a red fabric background. Signed and marked 335 at the base of the pendant. North Africa, 19th century 14.5 x 12.5 cm; Gross weight: 147 g (Minor chips and chips in the enamel) Related work: The Israeli Museum, Jerusalem, inv. no. B86.0330. Among the Sephardic Jews, the clover symbolises the Hamsa or Khamsa (Sacred Hand), an apotropaic symbol of Amazigh origin. Worn as a necklace in the Marrakech region, this pendant can also be used as a belt buckle in the Fez region.
