Carved ivory in high relief depicting the Western Man personified as a soldier-monk holding in his right hand rods and a whip – symbols of the Flagellation – and the conqueror’s standard-bearer’s spear in the other, his face turned towards the inspiring Dove; four Chinese characters in the field on the right, which can be translated as ‘Old Man of the West’.
