Warhol created the ‘You’re In’ project in 1967 by filling Coca-Cola bottles with a cheap eau de cologne called ‘Silver Lining’. The project made its debut on a poster for an exhibition at the Museum of Merchandise, which announced that the bottles were filled with toilet water and was mischievously titled ‘You’re In’. By suggesting that this bottle of Coca-Cola was filled with urine, Warhol appeared to be disparaging the product that all Americans used on a daily basis: in his 1975 book entitled ‘The Philosophy of Andy Warhol’, he proclaimed: ‘The President drinks Coca-Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca-Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca-Cola too’. The ‘You’re In’ project quickly sparked a scandal involving Coca-Cola, leading to its cancellation. This work encapsulates Warhol’s profound and unrivalled ability to both preserve and subvert the commercial identity of everyday objects.
