Description
TEMPORARY IMPORT LOT RARE SET OF DRAWINGS From the emerald and diamond jewellery set presented by Napoleon I to Empress Marie-Louise of Austria, comprising two tiaras, a pair of earrings, a necklace and a bracelet. Brown ink, watercolour and graphite. Drawings produced around 1950, probably at the time of the set’s acquisition by Van Cleef & Arpels, preserved in the archives of W.A. Bolin. Annotated and bearing a collector’s stamp. 27.8 x 20.5 cm. A photograph and an extract from Vincent Meylan’s book, *Trésors et légendes, Van Cleef & Arpels* (published by Télémaque), are enclosed. A rare set of drawings of the emerald and diamond jewellery set presented by Napoleon I to Empress Marie-Louise of Austria, comprising two tiaras, a pair of earrings, a necklace and a bracelet. Circa 1950. Lot on temporary import. Note: These drawings, produced on a 1:1 scale, provide a unique record of an imperial jewellery set that forms part of French history, which was then intact and complete. Commissioned in 1810 by Napoleon I from Marie-Etienne Nitot, the jewellery was intended for the future Empress Marie-Louise. Following the fall of the Empire, the large and small tiaras, the pair of earrings, the necklace and the belt buckle were taken to Vienna and kept by the Habsburgs. Sold around the turn of the 1950s, the tiaras were altered and dismantled, whilst the rest of the set was resold; it was then finally stolen from the Louvre in 2025. Provenance: - W.A. Bolin Collection. - Private collection.
