Description
A blue-and-white porcelain dish, known as ‘Hue blue’, decorated with a scene depicting King Gia Long’s flight (‘Gia Long tẩu quốc’), accompanied by a poem written in Nôm script. Edged with metal.
Two-character mark in blue, applied under the glaze on the base: ‘Ngoan Ngoc’, meaning ‘jade jewel’.
Made in China for Vietnam, 19th century.
Diameter: 13 cm.
(Hairline crack, small chip and pitting). (Chips and repairs beneath the mount).
This rare design recounts the legendary story of King Gia Long’s flight: ‘Gia Long tẩu quốc’ (translated as ‘Gia Long in search of the restoration of his kingdom’). In exile for 28 years, the king travelled through the south in pursuit of the unification of Vietnam and the founding of the Nguyễn dynasty. In this design, a figure (the king) lying on the ground holds a parasol, whilst another figure prepares to come to his aid in a boat, from a small islet featuring a house (a symbol of protection and a place of worship) and a weeping willow (alluding to the hermit, the sage). This is a rare motif, given the general reluctance to depict the emperor in a position of flight.
Dish decorated with the scene of King Gia Long’s escape (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”), depicting the king holding a parasol whilst another figure approaches by boat to rescue him from a small island featuring a house and a weeping willow. Marked “Ngoạn Ngọc”.
