Description
A rare blue-and-white porcelain bowl, known as ‘Hue blue’, decorated with a dragon drawing in the waves, accompanied by a Thọ symbol.
Marked with two horizontal characters in blue underglaze, reading ‘Trân Ngoan’ (meaning ‘jade trinket’), on the base.
Made in China for Vietnam, 18th century, Tây Son Dynasty (1788–1802).
Diameter: 13.9 cm.
This rare example from the Tây Son period faithfully reproduces the decoration painted on the ‘Noi phu thi trung’ porcelain, commissioned by the Trinh lords during the 18th century, notably for their palace in Thang Long, now Hanoi. In 1786, General Nguyen Hue (the future Emperor Quang Trung) took possession of these porcelain pieces and brought them back to Phú Xuân (Hue).
Reproducing with a degree of accuracy the designs of the ‘Hue blues’ produced for the previous dynasty, Vietnamese ambassadors
began placing orders from 1789 for porcelain bearing the mark ‘Trân Ngoan’ – meaning ‘jade trinket’ ’, written horizontally, thus distinguishing it from the usual vertical script found in the Middle Kingdom and on pieces produced for the Nguyen court in Hué.
