TRINH QUOC CHIEN (1966) Graduated from the University of Fine Arts in 1993. Lute player. Polychrome and gold lacquered wooden panel, with eggshell inlays, signed and dated ‘96’ in the bottom left-hand corner and bearing the artist’s stamp. Dimensions: 57.5 x 43 cm. Trinh Quoc Chien specialises in the art of lacquer. His works, usually comprising several panels, feature relief surfaces and inlays, and depict asymmetrical representations of complex Buddhist meditations. The composition initially appears as a balanced whole, before revealing a fragmented structure in which each panel offers a unique perspective, constituting a fragment of a whole to be pieced together in relation to the work’s main theme.
