Description
C. LEVIER (20th century). Couple on the terrace overlooking Ha Long Bay. (Localised and dated ‘Vat Chay 05/53’ on the reverse) Landscape by the river. Two framed watercolours, signed in the bottom right-hand corner. Dimensions: 23.5 x 32 and 23.5 x 31.5 cm Vat-Chay, near Ha Long Bay, was home to the North Vietnam commandos, a special unit of the French Far East Expeditionary Corps established by General de Lattre de Tassigny. The commandos operated from September 1951 to July 1954, from North Vietnam to Laos. These two watercolours are probably the work of a French soldier stationed at Vat-Chay.
