Description
A rare, wide blue-and-white porcelain bowl, known as ‘Hue blue’, decorated with a lakeside landscape at the foot of the mountains, featuring fishermen and other figures, and embellished with a poem written in Nôm script ‘Tam Thai thính triều’ by Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu.
Blue underglaze mark consisting of two characters, ‘Than Ngoan’, within a double circle beneath the base.
Made in China for Vietnam, 18th century.
Diameter: 19.7 cm.
Height: 7.5 cm.

According to tradition, King Gia Long (reign: 1802–1820) is said to have used the first two characters from the beginning of the poem to name Vietnam in 1802 when he founded the Nguyễn Dynasty.
Bowl decorated with a lakeside landscape at the foot of the mountains, featuring fishermen and other figures, and inscribed with the poem “Tam Thai thính triều”. Marked Thanh Ngoạn 清玩, porcelain of Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu (1675–1725).
It is widely believed that Emperor Gia Long of the Nguyễn dynasty adopted the first two characters of the poem to form the name “Việt Nam” when he established the country’s name in 1802.
