Founder of the Gìa Dinh School of Fine Arts.
Woman Carrying Fruit.
Watercolour on paper mounted on board, signed, dated August 1922 and inscribed in the bottom right-hand corner ‘To Madame de Mari, in memory of the happy days spent in Sampa’.
Dimensions: 34.7 x 24.7 cm.
Watercolours by André Joyeux are rare; he is best known for his illustrations in books and on postcards.
A graduate of the architecture department at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, André Joyeux arrived in Cochinchina at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1906, he exhibited paintings for the Tonkin pavilion at the colonial exhibition in Marseille. He was appointed a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Bien Hoa, then Chief Inspector of the art schools of Cochinchina in 1911, and finally, in 1913, when the famous Gia Dinh School of Art was founded, he served as its first Director.
