REIGN OF HIS MAJESTY DONG KHANH (1885–1889)
IMPERIAL ORDER OF THE DRAGON OF ANNAM.
Certificate embroidered in polychrome on black satin, framed.
The composition follows the traditional layout of a certificate of the Order of the Dragon of Annam: the Annam Dragon medal, flanked by two trophies of Hast’s arms, surmounts the characters ‘Đại Nam Long Tinh Viện 大南龍星院’, meaning ‘the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam ’. However, the seal of the Emperor of Annam, ‘Đồng Khánh Hoàng Đế 同慶皇帝’, referring to His Majesty Đồng Khánh, the ninth sovereign of the Nguyễn dynasty and Emperor of Annam from 1885 to 1889, is placed within the ermine mantling with fleur-de-lis on the reverse of the great coat of arms of the kings of France and Navarre. Two halberds replace the sceptre and the sceptre of justice, and the whole is flanked by dragons in place of angels.
This unique iconography commemorates the establishment of the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam during the reign of His Majesty Emperor Đồng Khánh, following a proposal by the President of the French Republic.
