REIGN OF HIS MAJESTY DONG KHANH (1885–1889)
Scroll of an imperial decree, dated the 1st day of the seventh month of the second year of Emperor Đồng Khánh’s reign (1887).
On golden-yellow Dó paper from Annam, decorated with silver motifs depicting an imperial dragon and symbols of longevity. Bearing the imperial seal ‘Sắc Mệnh Chi Bảo’ (敕命之寶).

The commune of Hội Động, in Nam Xương district, Hà Nội province, traditionally venerated six deities: the god Linh Lang (靈郎上等神), the God of the Eastern Sea (東海上等神), the God of the Five Thunders (五雷之神), the Celestial God (天官之神), the God of the East (東方之神) and the local guardian deity (本土之神). These deities, renowned for having protected the kingdom and its people, had been awarded honorary titles by the imperial court. The decree conferred upon them the additional title of ‘Dực Bảo Trung Hưng’ (翊保中興) and authorised the continuation of their worship.
