Description
A pair of large blue-and-white porcelain bowls, known as ‘Hué blue’, decorated with a scene of a lakeside landscape at the foot of the mountains. The scene depicts a small boat gliding along the Perfume River, accompanied by a poem written in Nôm calligraphy:
“On the surface of the water where the sky is reflected,
A small boat floats in the middle of the river.
The blue mountains appear, rising in the distance,
The great river flows with its swift current.
Completely captivated by its struggle,
The traveller pays little heed to being alone;
Whilst waiting for fair weather,
He pays no attention to anyone.”
Marked ‘Nhat’ in blue underglaze on the foot and bearing a collector’s incised mark.
Made in China for Vietnam, 19th century.
