Description
REIGN OF HIS MAJESTY EMPEROR BAO DAI (1926–1945) Lucien Charles Auguste Varsavaux, known as WALERY, photographer (1866–1935). Full-length portrait of the Emperor of Annam in imperial regalia, his hand resting on his study materials. Circa 1930. Large reproduction of a photographic print, framed, signed and inscribed in the bottom right-hand corner: ‘To Mr Prignet, a grateful and affectionate memento from his pupil Bao Dai, Emperor of Annam’. From 1926 to 1935, the young Emperor received a Western education in Paris. It was during this period that he attended the prestigious Hattemer private school, founded in 1885 by Rose Hattemer from Alsace, and then headed by Mr Prignet, to whom this print is dedicated. The print was produced shortly before Bao Dai’s grand return to Indochina in 1932. Dimensions: 71x45 cm (visible area).
