Estimate €800 - €1,200
Description
VICTOR TARDIEU (1870–1937). Director of the Indochina School of Fine Arts from 1925 to 1937. Lyon School of Fine Arts, Indochina Prize in 1920. Ambulance at the Front. Circa 1914. Framed oil on panel. Unsigned. A long handwritten note in ink on the reverse, providing biographical details as well as the subject and date: “The Great War 1914. Ambulance at the Front, painted whilst Victor Tardieu was posted to the front with Squadron 25’. The abbreviation ‘H.C.’ following the signature indicates that this sketch was produced ‘Hors Concours’ (outside the competition). Dimensions: 13.8 x 18 cm. Provenance: Collection of Mr Gigot, Caline Tardieu’s dentist in Villiers-sous-Grez, and probably a gift from her. Passed down through the family. Victor Tardieu refers on numerous occasions in his correspondence to the pilots of No. 25 Squadron during the First World War, pilots with whom he shared daily life at the Front and for whom he produced some of these small panels. It should be noted that the vast majority of these small panels were lost in the fire at Victor Tardieu’s studio, making these two panels a particularly moving testament to that period. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mrs Alix Turolla-Tardieu, the artist’s heir, for the detailed biographical information she has provided.
