1890 [TONKIN] A set of sixteen albumin prints mounted on six double-sided cardboard sheets. Portraits and genre scenes feature prominently in this collection. It includes, in particular, photographs of Yen-Thé pirates who have been taken prisoner and shackled in the cangue, as well as a photograph of an execution. Also featured are a full-length portrait of the Quan-Bo of Phu Lý, an elegant seated figure, a woman styling her hair in front of a mirror, the wives of indigenous soldiers gathered around a table, and Tonkinese riflemen. Two further photographs depict an opium smoker and a Westerner (a Swiss-German officer, according to a captioned photograph), presumably the photographer himself, being carried in a rickshaw. The photographs also document several locations in Indochina: the entrance to the citadel at Thái Nguyên, the entrance to the Brush Pagoda in Hanoi, the banyan trees at the Consulate in Long-Tchéou, a panoramic view of Lang Son, and a view of the harbour. Dimensions of six photographs: 23x17 cm. Dimensions of the other eight: 18.5x11.5 cm.
