Description
French Polynesia, set of two conch shells. Second half of the 20th century. Large ‘Putoka’ conch shells made from the sea snail *Charonia tritonis*, also known as the giant triton or Neptune’s trumpet. The ends of the shells have been cut to create mouthpieces. ‘Putoka’ conch shells were used to gather the community together during tribal wars. Nowadays, they signal the return of fishermen from the sea and herald festivities. Beautiful, deep tone. Fundamental E (Mi). Lovely pearlescent shades; in good playing condition; produces sound easily. L: 24 cm and 24.5 cm
