Bamoun, Cameroon, first half of the 20th century. A superb olifant from the Bamoun people of north-western Cameroon (the Grasslands region). Crafted using the lost-wax technique, this transverse horn is entirely adorned with geometric motifs. Friezes and spirals run along the body and bell of the instrument. Bells, leather and cowrie shell pendants, and a carrying strap complete the decoration. This prestigious olifant, which is in playing condition, is of particularly fine workmanship.
