Description
Mitsogho, Lambaréné, Middle Ogooué, Gabon, 1950. A remarkable ‘Nsambi’ multi-stringed instrument with five bows and five strings from the Mitsogho people. According to André Schaeffner in his book *Origins of Musical Instruments*: ‘Michael Pretorius’s *Theatre of Musical Instruments*, published in 1620, mentions this instrument for the first time’. Later, a single neck replaced the bows, and the instrument became a harp. The Nsambi is an instrument used in the Bwiti initiation rites in Gabon. Geometric motifs adorn the soundboard and sides of the instrument. The bows are extended by rattles fitted with iron rings. Wood, strings made from plant fibres.
