Description
Punu, Gabon A ceremonial bell with an external clapper; the handle is extended by a second face. Like the Okuyi masks, the facial expressions are enigmatic and serene: half-closed ‘coffee bean’-shaped eyes surmounted by long, arched eyebrows. The red paduk pigment highlights full lips, as do the nine-diamond motifs on the forehead. The faces are coated with kaolin. The base of the bell is reinforced with a protective lacing of plant fibres. This gong, played alongside other percussion instruments, accompanies the Punu’s dances on stilts.
