Description
Dan, Côte d’Ivoire, first half of the 20th century. An exceptional single-piece ‘slit-xylophone drum’ with three slits. Each slat, similar to that of a xylophone, produces a different sound depending on its length and thickness. Made from Gô wood, renowned for its acoustic qualities, this xylophone drum has all but disappeared from the forested regions of north-western Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea. Its primary functions were to gather men together during tribal wars and for the processions of the circumcised, the masked dancers and work in the fields. Complex in construction, its creation was the work of master carvers. A true ‘speaking body’, the drum rests on two short, stocky legs that ensure it is firmly anchored to the ground. The body is extended by a long, ringed neck, to which a carrying strap can be attached during dances and when moving the instrument. The head displays the powerful features characteristic of Dan statuary: a face with a solemn expression, a rounded forehead, half-closed eyes, and prominent cheekbones framing a full mouth. A very fine patina ranging from dark brown to black. Dense wood, in playing condition. H: 46 cm, weight: 1.2 kg
