Description
Kulango-Lobi, Côte d’Ivoire, mid-20th century. A beautiful, prestigious ‘amulet whistle’. This anthropomorphic whistle is reminiscent of those used by Lobi hunters to communicate with one another. Its design is typical of the art of their Kulango neighbours, who are renowned for their expertise in the lost-wax bronze casting technique. The trapezoidal base, characteristic of Kulango sculptures, is replaced by a wide, flared mouthpiece. Two playing holes are situated on either side, beneath the mouthpiece. Whether closed or open, these playing holes allow the pitch and timbre of the instrument to be altered. H: 11.5 cm H with base: 20 cm Beautiful, nuanced patina. In playing condition. Produces sound easily. Sold with its stand.
