Dan, Ivory Coast, first half of the 20th century A superb anthropomorphic, single-piece olifant of the Dan people. Of considerable length, it is the exclusive property of the village chief. As the lowest-pitched horn, it symbolises the father. It leads the ensemble of five to eight horns during departures for or returns from tribal wars. A transverse olifant with a rimmed mouthpiece, it is topped by a head displaying all the aesthetic features of Dan masks: a rounded forehead, half-closed eyes, and prominent cheekbones framing a full mouth. The facial expression is solemn. The neck and bell are wrapped in animal skin. This piece was crafted by Malinké griots. This anthropomorphic olifant has disappeared from the Dan territory in north-eastern Côte d’Ivoire as well as from neighbouring states (Guinea, Liberia, etc.) Deep brown patina from use. Minor repairs to the bell. Wood, animal hide, iron nails. In playing condition. L: 75 cm With base
