Description
Lobi, Burkina Faso, mid-20th century. A striking and rare ‘Kolojo’ forked harp, resembling a multi-stringed bow. On harps, the strings are stretched between the neck and the soundbox. On the ‘Kolojo’ harp, the bow is attached to the soundbox—a double diamond-shaped structure made of wood and covered with animal skin using lacing. The strings are tuned by twisting them on one side of the neck. The tuning is pentatonic. The ‘Kolojo’ harp accompanies songs, laments and epics.
