India, Uttar Pradesh, first half of the 20th century. A superb ‘Sarinda’ bowed fiddle with a multi-lobed soundbox, the top of which is covered with animal skin. The long neck features three tuning pegs and is topped with a stylised bird covered in thin brass plates. The back of the instrument is adorned with a frieze carved along its length. Traces of polychrome decoration can be seen inside the soundbox. Elegantly and meticulously crafted, the Sarinda is played by both folk and professional musicians during festive ceremonies in the Himalayas. Wood, metal, animal skin. H: 71 cm
