Description
[SOUTH AMERICA]
900‰ silver BALANGANDAN PENCA comprising charms.
Brazil (Bahia), late 19th or early 20th century.
Total weight: 271 g
The penca de balangandan is of Afro-Brazilian origin. The curved shape of the frame is reminiscent of the ship that brought slaves from Africa. Originally, it was the slaves brought to Brazil who collected the various charms – sometimes given to them by their masters – both as good-luck charms and as ‘personal treasures’.
