Canvas by Otto Henry Bacher. Originally from Cleveland, Otto Henry Bacher was one of the founders of the city’s Academy of Fine Arts. Alongside Willis Seaver Adams, he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1878 and subsequently travelled throughout various regions of Europe. Having become friends with James McNeill Whistler, he continued to practise painting and printmaking, drawing inspiration from Whistler’s Impressionist style. Returning to the United States in 1888, he settled in New York after his marriage and became a member of the Lawrence Park artists’ colony, alongside Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. He received various awards, including a silver medal at the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair for his engravings. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of modernity in American art, as well as one of the founding members of the first school of Impressionist painters in Cleveland.
