Johann-Baptiste Stahl (Alsatian, 1869–1932) Venus at Her Toilet Circular phanolith plaque. For Villeroy & Boch. Made in Mettlach and numbered “2443”. Diameter 43 cm. A gold medallist at the 1900 World’s Fair for the invention of Phanolith, Stahl was inspired by Art Nouveau and revitalised the classical style for the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, in the Saarland, where he headed the school of design.
