Description
A fine piece of work, probably from Antwerp, in the 17th-century style. Large offering dish from the siege of Ostend Repoussé and chiselled brass, depicting a double equestrian portrait of Albert and Isabella of Brabant before the siege of Ostend. Inscribed ‘Albertus et Isabella D.C. Archid. Austriae. Duces Burgun. Brabant Com. Flandriae’. Signed ‘JB VD Broek fecit Antwerpen’. Diameter 95 cm. Damage and missing sections. GERRITZS’ ENGRAVING OF THE SIEGE OF OSTEND Following their marriage in 1599, Archduke Albert of Austria and Infanta Isabella Claire Eugénie continued the struggle against the United Provinces and captured the city of Ostend at the end of one of the longest and bloodiest sieges in history (1601–1604). Our plate, depicting the sovereigns in a double equestrian portrait before the besieged city, is based on an engraving attributed to Hessel Gerritsz, dating from before 1632 and held at the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-P-OB-52.612). The image was also used by Emmanuel van Meteren for his *History of the Netherlands and its Neighbouring Wars up to 1612*, published in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz. Schipper in 1652.
