based on the cartoons by Lucas of Leiden (Leiden, 1494–1533)
Spring
A tapestry from the series depicting the Seasons, created by Lucas in 1535.
An aristocratic couple visit a kitchen garden where they are greeted by a gardener, whilst others are digging, planting and pruning, against a backdrop of a Flemish castle with a fountain and Roman ruins.
With a border of a garland of flowers.
Height 265, Length 378 cm.
Shrunken, with signs of wear and losses.
Provenance: private collection, Paris.
Tapestry depicting Spring, woven in Brussels in the 17th century, as a continuation of the ‘Seasons of Lucas’ series of tapestries.
