Description
Wall sconce and its lamp base
Tortoiseshell, rosewood veneer and bronze.
The violin-shaped case features, at its centre, a dial with white enamelled cartouches displaying the hours in Roman numerals and an apocryphal cartouche signed ‘J. Baptiste Baillon’. It is surmounted by a figure of Fame. The lower section is decorated with acanthus leaves, volutes and a mascaron. Four sheathed feet ending in flattened balls.
The lamp base is of the same design.
The movement, signed “Terrier à Paris”, is fitted with a Brocot suspension.
Partly from the Regency period.
Case: Height 93, Width 45, Depth 17 cm.
Lamp base: Height 34, Width 45, Depth 23 cm.
Total height 121 cm.
Missing parts, restorations and alterations.
Provenance: estate of an antique dealer, Orléans.
Tortoiseshell, veneer and bronze wall clock, partly from the Regency period, bearing the apocryphal signature of Baillon.
Tardy’s *Dictionnaire des horlogers français* lists, on p. 608, four clockmakers working under the name Terrien between Year XII (1803–1804) and 1818.
