19th-century English school after Edward Hodges Baily (English, 1788–1867) Eve at the Fountain White marble. The model was created around 1818. The sculptor of this example is unknown. First exhibited in 1820 as a plaster cast, then in marble in 1821, Edward Hodges Baily’s sculpture of Eve at the Fountain was a resounding success and earned the artist election as a member of the Royal Academy in London. He joined John Flaxman’s studio in 1807 as an assistant, and was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1809. Building on his academic training, Baily became one of the leading figures of English Neoclassicism. The marble sculpture donated to the Royal Academy as an ‘admission piece’ (now in the Bristol City Art Gallery) brought the sculptor European renown when it was exhibited at the Great Exhibitions of 1853 and 1862. A second marble version is held at the Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.
