Célestin François-Louis Gosse (French, 1833–1895) Studio collection on ‘decorative and industrial architecture’ Comprising over 2,000 pencil or pen drawings on sheets of paper or tracing paper. It consists of 31 folders organised into different themes: “interiors, antiquity, tapestries, figures, miscellaneous, ceilings, seating, neo-styles, furniture, details”. Numerous drawings on sheets are gathered in folders titled, for example, “Renaissance, Gothic, Fireplaces, Seating”, and also illustrating motifs from the Far East. They include both early works and pieces from his formative years, as well as studies and designs for ornamental purposes. Various sizes. There are also two large framed drawings, including a rich composition depicting a dining room (50 x 64 cm, with some damage), an Italian-style album, and various engravings, such as four working drawings of the Opéra Garnier engraved on fabric. Two certificates awarded to the artist: Société des artistes français at the 1886 Exhibition (honourable mention), 1889 World’s Fair (gold medal – Group III, Class 18). 4 volumes of *L’Exposition universelle de 1889* by Monod, a limited edition, numbered and published in Gosse’s name (Volumes I to III, and album). As is. Provenance: family estate, Berry. Born on 12 January 1833 in Paris, Célestin François Louis Gosse trained under Louis Riquier (1792–1884) and Charles-Antoine Cambon (1802–1875). It was under the latter – who was notably responsible for the architectural sets at the Opéra Comique, the Bouffes-Parisiens and the Opéra Garnier – that he was introduced to this art form. Gosse regularly exhibited at the Salons between 1869 and 1895 and was awarded two gold medals at the Universal Exhibitions of 1878 and 1889. At the first of these, he exhibited “interior drawings” in the Galerie des Arts at the Champ de Mars, in the category dedicated to “the practical application of the arts of drawing and sculpture”. He distinguished himself as one of the finest practitioners of his discipline amongst the 35 studios of “interior and monumental painters and decorators” based in Paris at that time. We are therefore presenting in this sale the gold medal he received in this category at the 1878 World’s Fair (lot 502). The second, awarded at the 1889 World’s Fair, provided him with the opportunity to present furniture designs in the category relating to “the works of upholsterers and decorators”. This artist can be traced to several addresses throughout his career: 13 Rue de la Villette, Villa Barthélémy, in Belleville in 1869, then at 182 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis in Paris from 1873, and at Le Plant de Champigny in the Seine department, at 4 Impasse Saint-Amand in 1889
