Jules Clément Chaplain (French, 1839–1909) Medal from the 1878 World’s Fair awarded to Célestin Gosse. 916-thousandths gold. The obverse features the Republic in profile, crowned with laurels, and the motto ‘République Française’. The reverse is adorned with Fame preparing to crown the victor and an angel holding a cartouche against a background of the Champ-de-Mars, bearing the name of Charles Gosse, the motto ‘1878 International Universal Exhibition, Paris’ and the engraver’s mark. Edge marked with the gold hallmark and the bee. Accompanied by the certificate awarded with the medal on 21 October 1878. Diameter: 50.3 mm. Weight: 84.2 g. (minor scratches) Provenance: family estate, Berry. Included: ‘Pro laboria Gloria’ medal, gilded bronze after a design by Frédéric de Vernon (1858–1912). Reverse bearing the inscription: ‘Child! A wise man said: my fortune is knowledge; / and labour is the soul and sustenance of life. // Go! Now shape your youthful experience / towards noble sentiments: beauty! Truth!
