Bibliography: Jean-Charles Hachet, *Illustrated Dictionary of Animal Sculptors & Casters from Antiquity to the Present Day*, Argus Valentines, Bilbao, 2005, Volume II, model reproduced on p. 771. A pupil of Georges Gardet, he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1898 onwards, specialising in animal art, particularly hunting scenes. This sculpture, exceptional for its size, takes up a theme that was particularly popular in cast editions, namely the ‘hallali’ of the wild boar. This theme was notably celebrated by artists such as Pierre Jules Mêne and Georges Gardet, from whom it borrows certain elements, such as the dog on its back.
