Fireplace ornament, 19th century
Onyx, bronze and cloisonné enamel.
Decorated with foliage and arabesques, comprising a clock and two candlesticks:
- The cage-shaped clock, with its ornate front, features a moulded cornice at the top. The dial, signed ‘Chapus’, displays the hours in Arabic numerals. The uprights are in the form of stylised pilasters with foliage decoration. Four glazed feet. Brocot suspension mechanism with a mercury pendulum. The movement plate is signed “A la gerbe d’or / A. Chapus / Paris / Rue de Rivoli 86”. Numbered “2448”.
- The baluster-shaped candlesticks feature a twisted decoration on the rim, whilst the neck and base are adorned with acanthus leaves. The square base has a slightly undulating front. Four splayed feet.
Late 19th century.
