Description
Hexagonal lantern from the late 19th century
Wrought iron and stained glass.
Topped by a crown. The sides feature stained-glass panels surrounded by twisted columns. The lower section is decorated with scrollwork.
Dated from the late 19th century.
Height: 80 cm.
Minor imperfections.
Provenance:
- believed to have come from the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire;
- private collection in the Blois area.
Among its illustrious owners, the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire counted, in the 16th century, Catherine de’ Medici, who exchanged it with her rival Diane de Poitiers upon the king’s death. In addition to the Leray family in the 18th century, who organised the production of medallions by Jean-Baptiste Nini to finance, amongst other things, the American War of Independence, Chaumont was owned by Marie Say, who married Amédée de Broglie and later Louis-Ferdinand d’Orléans. The château was sold to the State in 1938 for 1,800,000 francs, and the furnishings were scattered across the courtyard.
