Description
Two so-called Javanese dolls
A priest and a mother with her child
Polychrome carved wood.
Height: 18.5 and 19 cm.
Damage and missing parts.
Provenance: according to family tradition, these dolls were brought back from the opening of the Suez Canal on 17 November 1869 by Françoise, Countess of La Poëze (1832–1870), a lady-in-waiting at the court of Empress Eugénie, who took part in the voyage and whose resemblance to ‘the Sultana of France’ enabled the sovereign, when she was unwell, to be discreetly replaced; by descent.
The Musée de la Vie Romantique in Paris holds a collection of similar small figurines from Java, also dating from the 19th century (CSR OB 24)
