Description
Raingo Frères Fireplace set Onyx and gilded bronze, comprising a clock and a pair of candelabra. The clock is topped by a quiver and a torch within a laurel wreath, surmounting a white enamelled dial displaying the hours in Roman numerals, the minutes in Arabic numerals and a railway-style track. Signed ‘Raingo Fres / Paris’, it is flanked by two knotted cornucopias and sits atop a bas-relief decorated with foliage. Six fluted feet. The base is numbered ‘172’ and bears the Raingo Frères company stamp. Brocot suspension. Four-light candelabra, the central section topped with a pomegranate, the side arms decorated with acanthus leaves alternating with small flowers. The light arms feature foliage motifs ending in pomegranates. They rest on a fluted and serrated pedestal surrounded by cornucopias. The base features three bas-reliefs: the central one adorned with a quiver and a torch, the other two with laurel garlands. Six gadrooned feet. Napoleon III period. Clock: Height 45, Width 35, Depth 14.5 cm. Candelabra: Height 50.5 cm. Raingo Frères, founded in 1823, was established by the four sons of the clockmaker Zacharie-Joseph Raingo, himself the son of Nicolas-Joseph and Marie-Magdelaine Decrolyet. On the strength of its achievements, the company was awarded a bronze medal by the jury of the Exposition des Produits de l’Industrie in 1844. The Raingos supplied the most prominent figures of the time, including Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugénie, from 1860 onwards.
