Heinrich Bürck was a painter born in Dresden, Germany, in 1850.
Whilst little is known about Heinrich Bürck’s life, there is also little information regarding his artistic training as a history painter and his career as a teacher. He studied in his hometown of Dresden under the history painter Theodor Grosse (1829–1891), before moving to Antwerp to study under the Belgian artist Wilhelm Pauwels (1830–1904). On his return to Berlin, Germany, Bürck studied under the realist painter Karl Gussow (1843–1907). Later in life, he became an assistant professor of painting at the Berlin Academy.
This painting, created during the Symbolist period, is notable for its atmosphere, which blends the mystical, the natural and the supernatural.
