In the meadows and groves to the east of the Grand Trianon, Louis XV, at the instigation of Madame de Pompadour, commissioned Claude Richard in 1750 – assisted ten years later by Bernard de Jussieu – to lay out a ‘botanical garden’ that reflected his passionate interest in botanical experiments
