Marcel BASCOULARD (1913–1978) Saint Etienne Cathedral, Bourges Pen and ink wash on paper Signed and dated in the bottom right-hand corner 35 x 26 cm (image size) Framed under glass Marcel Bascoulard was born on 10 February 1913 in Bigny-Vallenay in the Cher department. Upon leaving secondary school, his teachers recognised his artistic talent and encouraged him to attend the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Bourges. After his father was murdered by his mother, Bascoulard quickly became a social outcast, living first in shacks and then in a lorry. He spent his time sketching the city’s streets and survived by bartering or selling his drawings. He produced several views of Bourges Cathedral, which he immortalised in Indian ink. He gradually became a familiar figure in the town – a homeless artist who was often looked down upon, yet who has since become a legend. He was murdered on 12 January 1978 by a social outcast. A bronze bust was unveiled in his memory and a square in the city bears his name… His photographs are collected all over the world.
