Description
Pierre DUPUIS (1610–1682), attributed to Still Life with Birds and Fruit Canvas 45.5 x 55 cm Bears a monogram in the lower right-hand corner: PD Provenance: Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Piasa), 10 March 1999, lot 47, illustrated. Pierre Dupuis, the son of a merchant, was born in 1610 in Montfort-l’Amaury. Around 1630, he moved to Paris and developed an interest in still lifes, meeting painters specialising in this genre such as Pieter van Boucle (c. 1600–1673) and Louise Moillon (1610–1696). He travelled to Italy around 1635 and became friends with the great French Classicist artist Pierre Mignard (1612–1695). He then moved to Avignon, where he married Anne de La Pierre in 1640. Returning to Paris around 1640, he quickly achieved success and in 1646 was appointed official painter to the King’s stables by Henri de Lorraine (1601–1666), Grand Equerry of France, receiving an annual allowance of 100 livres in this capacity. Highly regarded in France, Pierre Dupuis’s reputation grew abroad. Archduke Leopold-Guillaume of Habsburg (1614–1662), Governor of the Netherlands, bishop and art collector, owned three paintings by the artist in his gallery in Brussels. Dupuis was elected a member of the Academy in 1663, with his admission piece being *Still Life with Plums, Pomegranates and Fleurs-de-lis*. He thus incorporated elements of the Flemish and Italian schools and, as this painting so clearly demonstrates, helped to create a style of painting that appears uniquely French, and which would lead to the classical compositions of artists such as Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer and Alexandre-François Desportes.
