Description
19th-century French school, follower of Claudius JACQUAND (1804–1878) The Young Gaston, known as the Angel of Foix Canvas 82 x 116 cm Unframed A copy of Jacquand’s painting from the 1838 Salon, now in the Louvre. Claudius JACQUAND (1804–1878) was born on 16 December 1804 in Lyon and died on 2 April 1878 in Paris. He was a pupil of Fleury Richard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and was awarded first prize for painting in 1821. He exhibited at the Lyon Salon from 1822 and at the Paris Salon from 1824. His work was admired by Louis Philippe, who in 1834 purchased *Louise Labé Presented to François I*, following which Jacquand received an official commission for seven paintings for the Versailles Museum. He moved to Paris in 1836 and was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1839. He left Paris and settled in Boulogne-sur-Mer between 1852 and 1855, where he was commissioned to decorate the town hall. In 1857, he was once again commissioned by the authorities to produce *The Coronation of the Virgin*, painted on a gold background. His historical and genre paintings are skilfully composed and executed with great finesse. He oscillated between symbolism, religion and historical realism, in a Neo-Renaissance style drawing its themes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
