Description
Claude Michel Hamon DUPLESSIS (Active in Versailles from 1791 to 1799) Merchants boarding their sailing ships in a port in the Netherlands Prepared panel 30 x 52.5 cm This painter was mainly active in Paris in the late 18th century and is specifically documented as having worked in Versailles from 1790 to 1799. The brilliant quality of the colours, the careful and fluid application, the richness of detail and the finesse of the pictorial surface in these works are typical characteristics of Duplessis’s finest works. Specialising in scenes of this genre, often enlivened by figures, carts, horsemen or travellers stopping for a rest, the artist’s style—inspired by Italian art—is also influenced by Flemish examples, in a blend that enjoyed great success in 18th-century Paris. His works display remarkable elegance, and his compositions particularly reflect the influence of Philips Wouwerman (Haarlem, 1619–1668). His style is reminiscent of the work of painters such as Cornelis Gerritsz Decker, Simon Johannes Van Douw, Jan Asselijn, Hendrick Verschuring, Reinhold Braun and Frans Soolmaker.
