Description
19th-century Russian school Portrait of Piotr Vassilievitch Davydov (1825–1912) Oil on canvas, unsigned. Bears an old label in Cyrillic on the reverse identifying the subject. Framed. Warped canvas. H. 24 x W. 20.5 cm. Background Pyotr Vasilievich Davydov (1825–1912) came from a prominent Russian noble family with links to the Decembrist movement. His father, who was involved in the 1825 uprising, was exiled to Siberia, leading Piotr to settle in Krasnoyarsk in 1850. In 1856, the family officially regained its noble status. Through his marriage to Princess Elisabeth Trubetskoy, daughter of another Decembrist, he became part of a network of prominent Russian aristocratic families. His life exemplifies the fate of this generation, marked by exile but subsequently reintegrated into imperial society.
