Description
Jean MERCIER de LATOUCHE (1876–1947) – Breton School The Pointe du Raz – Plogoff – Finistère Oil on canvas Signed lower right 38 x 55 cm A small tear, a very slight dent (barely visible) Classified as a ‘Grand Site de France’, the Pointe du Raz in Brittany rises to a height of some 70 metres. Sculpted by the ocean and the winds, it alone is worth the trip to the region. Opposite it stands the square lighthouse on the islet of La Vieille, which was first lit in 1887 and automated in 1995. Beyond the untamed rocks and the emerald sea, the panoramic view out to sea offers a glimpse of the Île de Sein and, on a clear day, the Ar Men lighthouse. At Cap-Sizun, the Pointe du Millier, the Pointe de Beuzec and the Pointe de Brézellec are also exceptional spots for a walk, offering views of the Cap de la Chèvre. This picture of a Breton landscape is reminiscent of the artists who worked in Finistère (29), including Maurice Denis in Ploumanac’h, Eugène Boudin in Camaret, Gauguin in Pont-Aven - Paul Sérusier in Huelgoat – and Mathurin Méheut in Guérande.
