Gaston THIERY (1922–2013) Landscape of the Creuse region – Crozant School Jupille Rock? – The Painters’ Valley Oil on canvas 33.5 x 41 cm Minor losses Born in Lille in 1922, Gaston THIERY undertook classical studies in France and Belgium, before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in the decorative arts studio. In 1940, with war looming, he took refuge in Fresselines, in the Creuse region. A landscape painter, he is regarded as the successor to the Crozant school, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections across Europe, Japan and the United States. He exhibited his landscape and still-life paintings in the leading Parisian galleries. From 1965, at the invitation of Paul ANDRAUD, a master tapestry weaver in Aubusson, he produced his first tapestry cartoons. This venture lasted 30 years and resulted in the creation of over 100 cartoons. An accomplished artist, deeply involved in the life of his village, he left his mark on the Creuse Valley from 1940 to 2013.
