Description
Nicolas COUSTOU (1658–1733), after The Horse of Marly Patinated bronze sculpture Signed on the plinth H: 63, W: 50 cm The Horses of Marly, now housed in the Louvre Museum, are two sculptural groups depicting rearing horses and their grooms. Carved from Carrara marble, they were created between 1743 and 1745 by Guillaume Coustou, and were commissioned in 1739 by Louis XV from the sculptor Guillaume Coustou to adorn ‘the Marly drinking trough’ situated at the entrance to the grounds of the Château de Marly, to replace two existing sculptural groups.
