Description
WHITEFRIARS
An important commemorative crystal stemmed glass, a memento of King Edward VIII. The truncated conical bowl is engraved with ‘ER VIII 1937’ and surmounted by the British royal crown. The tubular stem is adorned with a twisted pattern in the colours of the British flag (blue, white, red) and rests on a circular base, bearing the crystal manufacturer’s name in full beneath.
H. 23 cm – Bowl diameter: 11 cm
Note: King Edward VIII ascended the throne in January 1936. His official coronation was planned and scheduled for 12 May 1937. In anticipation of this national event, renowned glass manufacturers, such as the English crystal manufacturer WHITEFRIARS, produced limited editions of goblets and ceremonial glasses in advance. These pieces bore the engraved inscription ‘ER VIII 1937’ surmounted by a royal crown. The glass manufacturers immediately ceased production of the Edward XVIII glasses when the King chose to abdicate in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, even before he had been crowned. The engravings for future designs were then replaced with the monogram of George VI.
